New Delhi: Large swathes of India are reeling under an intense heatwave this June, with temperatures breaching the 48°C mark in several northern and central regions. The relentless rise in mercury has not only disrupted daily life but has also triggered widespread health concerns, water shortages, and power cuts, prompting emergency responses from state and central authorities.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this is one of the most severe and prolonged heatwaves the country has experienced in over a decade. States like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and parts of Delhi-NCR have been placed on red alert, as temperatures hover dangerously above normal levels.
Record-breaking Temperatures
On Thursday, Phalodi in Rajasthan recorded a temperature of 49.2°C, the highest so far this summer. Meanwhile, Delhi touched 46.7°C in several parts of the city, with blistering winds and dry conditions adding to the discomfort.
“This heatwave is extraordinary in both intensity and duration,” said Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD. “Climate models indicate this could be the new normal, as climate change increases the frequency and severity of such events.”

Healthcare System Under Strain
Hospitals across the affected regions have reported a sharp spike in heatstroke and dehydration cases. In Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital alone, over 250 patients with heat-related symptoms have been admitted in the past week. Elderly individuals, children, and outdoor workers remain the most vulnerable groups.
“We’re treating cases of sunstroke, headaches, dizziness, and even renal complications,” said Dr. Neha Joshi, a physician at a government hospital in Lucknow. “There’s an urgent need for public awareness and precautions.”
Authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors during peak hours, drink adequate water, and wear light cotton clothing. Government-run clinics have also started distributing ORS packets and cold water in high-risk zones.
Water Crisis Deepens
As heat scorches the land, the country’s already stressed water resources are coming under increased pressure. Reservoir levels in many parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh have dropped dangerously low, sparking concerns over drinking water supply and agricultural impact.
In Bundelkhand and Marathwada, villagers are reportedly walking 4–5 kilometers daily to fetch potable water. Tankers are being deployed in over 3,000 villages in Maharashtra alone, while urban centers like Bengaluru and Hyderabad are witnessing rising water bills due to increased demand.
“We haven’t had regular water supply in over a week,” said Sunita Devi, a resident of Gwalior. “Every drop has become precious.”
The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti has urged state governments to prioritize drinking water over irrigation and instructed local bodies to prevent water wastage.
Power Demand Soars, Blackouts Reported
The heatwave has led to record-breaking power demand, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where air conditioner usage has peaked. India’s total power demand touched an all-time high of 239 GW this week, causing strain on thermal plants.
As a result, several regions have faced intermittent power cuts of up to 4–6 hours. In rural Bihar, reports of transformers overheating and tripping are becoming common, leaving households without fans or coolers during the day.
Union Power Minister R. K. Singh assured the public that efforts are underway to ensure uninterrupted supply. “We are monitoring the situation closely. Additional coal is being dispatched to power stations facing shortages,” he said.
Government Steps In
The central government has activated the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to coordinate relief efforts. State governments have been directed to set up heat shelters, especially in urban slums and rural hamlets, and ensure public health centers are fully stocked with medicines and electrolytes.
Schools in several districts across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana have been shut until further notice. Outdoor labor work under MNREGA has been temporarily suspended in afternoon hours to protect workers from heatstroke.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his latest ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address, urged citizens to take heat precautions seriously. “This heat is not to be taken lightly. Let us care for ourselves and others, especially the elderly, the poor, and animals who suffer in silence,” he said.
Looking Ahead
The IMD has forecast no major relief until the arrival of the monsoon in late June or early July in northern India. While parts of Kerala and the Northeast have started receiving pre-monsoon showers, their effects are yet to trickle upwards.
Environmentalists have once again called attention to India’s worsening urban heat island effect, deforestation, and inadequate climate planning.
“This crisis is a wake-up call,” said Sunita Narain, director of the Centre for Science and Environment. “Unless we invest in sustainable urban planning, water conservation, and green infrastructure, we will see more such extreme summers.”
As India battles rising temperatures, the coming days will test the resilience of its systems, the strength of its communities, and the urgency of its climate response.
