Even so, whether or not you are a beneficiary of the programme, you should be aware of it since if you are preparing for a competitive exam, it could be a one-mark question. So, we’ll explain the Suman Scheme to you in this article.
What Is Suman Scheme?
Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan is known as Suman (PMSMA). As its name implies, this programme was established by the union government to provide free, high-quality healthcare to expectant mothers, new moms, and infants.
The primary goal of implementing this programme is to make progress in lowering maternal mortality. Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, introduced the programme on October 10, 2019.

PM Suman Yojana 2022
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the standard of care for expectant mothers and babies as “the degree to which health care services are delivered to people and patient groups achieve intended health outcomes.
Health care must be secure, efficient, timely, effectively integrated, equitable, and people-centred to do this.
According to data from the Indian government, the country’s maternal death rate has decreased from 254 per 100,000 live births in 2004–06 to 130 in 2014–16.
The infant mortality rate decreased from 66 per 1,000 live births to 34 between 2001 and 2016, a summary of the statistics. The numbers inspire and show appreciation for the government’s and health ministries’ efforts.
What was the need to introduce Suman Scheme?
Since India already has public hospitals and the government has recently introduced the Ayushman Yojana, it is unclear why the Suman Scheme was introduced. It should go without saying that the best services should be provided to expectant moms, new mothers, and infants.
Even if there is a civil hospital in every country, the expectant mother must give birth at home in many states. The lack of mobility and poverty are the leading causes of this practice.
A woman in labour requires a clean environment and skilled assistance. The lady cannot receive the necessary medical aid from the neighbourhood dais or untrained women.
After reading about the programme, you must have realised it is intended for women expecting new parents. The no-expense policy benefits the mother and the child by assuring good health and high-quality care for new mothers and babies.

The women will be eligible to receive several government services after enrolling in the Suman Scheme. Pregnant women from APL and BPL families are covered under this programme.
Govt developed this programme to give pregnant women the most effective medical care and advice available. Pregnant women and newborns aged 0 to 6 months can receive all necessary medical care at no cost. The government will do all necessary medical exams for pregnant women at no charge.
Pregnant women will receive complimentary transportation to and from the hospital before and after delivery. The newborn infants will also receive regular care visits at their homes in addition to this. Under this programme, the government provides all services for free.

What is the procedure To Register for Suman Scheme?
Since its introduction in 2016, the Suman Scheme has been implemented in all 50 states. All civil hospitals must follow the Health Ministry’s instructions in every area.
The programme has already been implemented for the moms and infants who meet the requirements. You must go to the local civic hospital to use the services offered by this programme.
To lower baby and mother mortality rates, the Suman Scheme was introduced. The programme is urgently needed because, in rural areas, where few facilities and resources, women still have to give babies at home.
Regardless of their financial situation, all pregnant women in the nation will have access to medical facilities thanks to this programme.
